A game at Crawley Wargames club 2017
The Slammers objective attained albeit at the cost of a burning combat car
Outnumbered Slammers I took a trip to the Crawley Wargames Club in May to run a Crucible game for six members with my ‘to hand’ kit. A large table was provided and I ran a scenario using the ‘Imperial’ option to speed up movement and reduce firing ranges. The table had a river and a choke point provided by a bridge that some vehicles needed to cross (Slammer’s heavy blowers, for example) although others (combat cars, for instance) could circumvent this blockage by crossing the river under their own steam (literally). Ian Coleman and Rick Prior played two detachments of Slammers (well - almost: you’d think I could cont up to 16, wouldn’t you...?) with a few up armoured vehicles (cars and tanks) sprinkled amongst mostly older variants. In opposition Matthew Whelan and Philip Moores played two detachments of the Antargran regulars (with snipers to help saturate targets with missiles); Mike Jones played two detachments of the later Flaming Sword and Scott Duncan brought up the rear with a detachment of the Stewart Regiment. Leadership wise, Scott’s Stewarts had Major Fitzallen in charge and spent much of the game lobbing mortar shells the length of the table (a disadvantage of the imperial system...) and waiting for the arrival of the Slammers which they met with an impressive - and suicidal - close assault by infantry. Mike’s Flaming Sword had just a Captain and Lt and used their tank destroyers to try and chip away at the Slammers and form an effective blocking tactic by filling the bridge up with some of their heavy tank destroyers.
